Spot and Smudge - Book One

This spec fiction thriller masterfully kicks off the series. A 'boy and his dogs' tale that’s been kicked, bitten, attacked by a pack of wild dogs, genetically modified, and superbly crafted into a darkly humorous, wonderfully twisted, utterly unique story.

"He’s lying dead in the woods somewhere...and I think we both know who did it "

The Hogan’s weren’t looking to start a war. They just wanted to put their problems behind them, move closer to their recently widowed mother, and let their kids adopt some damn puppies.

But their quaint new town is harboring some gruesome secrets…

…and their strange new pups are not what they appear to be.

There’s a dark connection between these mysterious orphaned pups and the town’s twisted criminals…and that connection is dragging the Hogan’s into a ruthless fight they aren’t prepared to win.

But the grit of a devoted family, like the loyalty of a faithful pair of dogs, shouldn't be underestimated…

…Especially when those cunning dogs are the most significant leap forward in the forty million years of canine evolution.

This is not your typical story of a family and their dogs, instead you get Spot and Smudge. If you can imagine the offspring of Dean Koontz's dog Einstein from the Watchers and a Rambo Lassie then you have met the Hogan/Walter's family dogs. As for the story line you get a mystery, horror, suspense and of course a happy ending... for some. If you are looking for something dark and edgy then this your book. I can't wait to see what is next in the series.

Spot and Smudge Book One Volume 1 Robert Udulutch Books Reviews

Can you imagine the story-telling of King, the richness and beauty of Tolkien, the riveting excitement of Fleming (James Bond), and the wonderful and winding plots of MacLean? OK, you've got Robert Udulutch. Honest. Who could have imagined?

What a find! I was stumbling along with mediocre authors and stories that barely kept me in the books. Then an email ad changed my life. Well, at least it changed my last two or three weeks. I must have signed up for something bookish because what landed on my iPhone was a blurb from Udulutch. I sprang for Book One, happily.

That was a mistake. I had not a single free instant to breathe or eat or do responsible things for the next several days. All I did was read, riveted and enraptured. "Where has this man been all my life?!" I wailed. "Why did he only write four books?!"

So I had to buy books Two through Four. For weeks I was joyfully lost in a wondrous world. I’m writing this review about all four books at once.

One of Udulutch's great strengths is his depth of knowledge in many subjects. He uses that information in a way that makes the story even greater. Here are a few examples

* Grasp of humanity - Great authors, like Udulutch, draw people who act in real ways. They have real flaws. They love, they hate, they emote. They speak like real, flawed, people speak. The bottom line is, they exactly match all my life's observations about humanity. Wow does he do a great job on this.

* Dogs - No reading could teach you every nuance of dogs, the way Udulutch knows dogs. I grew up with dogs. These dogs are exactly right, and marvelous for that.

* Animal patterns and behaviors - His treatment of other animals - bears, lions, etc. - is well informed and interesting. They were eminently believable.

* Medicine - The concepts and terms that flow so convincingly and accurately from his pen never ceased to amaze me. This rich knowledge lends such an air of believability to the whole story.

* Science - What a deep and detailed understanding. It so improves the plot.

*Explosives, mining, guns,... - What a deep and rich understanding. I'm a guy so of course, I loved all the bangs and booms. However, beyond that, everything is seemingly accurate and thorough. Where did he find time to be so well versed in so many subjects? Pretty awesome, imho.

I'm out of time to rave about other areas, but the ones I noted, which Udulutch treats so masterfully, include Languages, Geography, and Culture.

Let me touch a few more specifics. It's not like I get paid for this, so forgive me if this review doesn't last a whole lot longer. (Actually, I do hope for payment. It was only now, well into the last book, that I came to see how desperately I want him to write a whole lot more books. I thought maybe if you, my dear fellow ians and ardent readers, could see what a gem we have in Robert "Bob" Udulutch, and the dogs, then he would have the incentive to write more. I'll let you know how well that works.)

I love his sense of humor. Some jokes are uproarious! I hope the zipper story stays with me for life, though I'm not sure what audience I could share it with. Udulutch has a clearly carnal view of mankind, and loves being open yet discreet about the attraction between the sexes. However, there are no sex scenes, which I think is fine and appropriate. The protagonists are teenagers, after all, as are many of the readers, no doubt.

Each book has several plot threads going through it. Say, we spend a few chapters meeting someone, such as an innocuous family with Scottish roots. Then we meet a really evil person or entity. Then we meet some other good guys. Then maybe another bad guy or three. The point is that after a while we are comfortably following the progress of several groups or individuals. Yet, the storyline is never too complicated. I find that I never lose track of who is who and how they fit.

Well, maybe I'll rave more another day, time permitting. After all, I can't get his fifth book yet.

Oh, btw, I like it that he *finishes* books. Since the 90s it has become too popular, for my taste, to simply stop writing the book a chapter or two from the end. No denouement. No victory of good over evil. No resolution of interpersonal conflicts. Some authors justify this shoddy performance with, "Oh, I'll let you figure out what ending you like." The ending I like is when the author has the courage to write an ending. Udulutch has that courage and sense of closure.

As I said, this review is about all the books. I intend to post it to all four. I hope you get to read it... Oh, wait, you’re at the bottom. All that’s left for you is to quickly hit, “Buy now with 1-Click,” and look forward to a thrilling adventure.

All right, then, my friends. First of all, this book is definitely NOT your standard off-the-shelf cutesy doggies-family story. Oh, hell, no. Instead, what you get is a unique and sophisticated canine brother-sister tail-wagger saga. Not quite sure how to define it, except to say it's science fiction-like, tinged with delicious horror and ample risqué. The tale is about some Tenacious (capital "T"!) little canines -and you don't wanna cross them or hurt their caretakers. In short, it's a strangely addictive and awesome read, actually.

Look, as mentioned elsewhere, and I concur, if you can fancy a brood by Dean Koontz's enigmatic dog Einstein (see "Watchers") on steroids -you are beginning to appreciate Spot & Smudge. As for the story line, you get a thriller, horror, and a guaranteed page turner. Especially if you're craving something gritty, darkish and irreverent, then you won't be disappointed.

Mind you, I'm NOT a dog person, but somehow I totally fell in love with these two genetically enhanced mutts! From their tenuous and vulnerable genesis, and their loyalty for their biped wardens and some totally freaky story lines all the way through the end.

By the way, did I mention the story is gritty? 'Cause it is. You have been forewarned. The author made this apropos disclaimer, and I quote

"This novel is a work of fiction, except for the parts that are somewhat based on truth. It contains a couple of bad words and mature themes that not all readers will appreciate."

A "couple", eh? -Righto. Buckle up, buckaroos!
I wanted to like this book so much. I love the premise. I have no problem with the technical execution of the writing. The author is obviously talented and a craftsman. This book is hard to describe. I want to say there is no happiness or joy, but that is not a true statement. But I honestly can't tell you where the happiness and joy is.
***
The plot and theme are are never hidden behind nice words to make the disgusting filth more palatable. There is quite a lot of swearing. There is also animal abuse, specifically dogs. There are stupid self centered people who engage in morally reprehensible behavior. There are good and kind people who do what's right regardless of the pain or personal cost. I truly wanted to enjoy this book, but I just can't. As another reviewer says, there is just too much pain and the pain overrides everything else.
***
That may make this the perfect book for you. But know when you start reading, when you start to understand the story and the ramifications of some of the characters' actions, the story will not get better before it gets much much worse.
