A fantastic read! Emily Dixon is funnyband outgoing, real and upfront. Not at all what you expect from a "Christian" book is hands down the most real and honest I have seen! It is everything I have googled as a young girl and everything I have wondered as a married woman! My husband even took time to read this in light of being parents to teenage girls in the future! Excellent writing, voice of experience, is blunt without being "reckless", is honest without sugar coating. Challenging ideas for any Christian woman with sexuality questions.
I read this after I became a widow after 31 years of marriage. Thank you Emily for discussing openly about a subject that is considered taboo ... even in today's society. I learned things and you have answered many questions (and some I didn't even realize that I had!) about a woman's body, sex and how a healthy marriage should look like. I highly recommend this for women and men, parents and teachers.
I absolutely love Emily's perspective on issues that young women in the church deal with today. She tackles all the hard stuff that was passed over and even things that maybe you haven't thought much of, or were to afraid to ask about. She also provides a new way of thinking about different issues, all while keeping it lighthearted. I can honestly say that I have never laughed so much while reading a book and yet still get so much out of it. Yes there are some topics that she discusses in the book that I haven't had to deal with but it was a good insight into what others may be dealing with that are going through those situations. I would highly recommend this even to the guys out there to read. But beware....there may be some things that you may not want to know about us females. Defiantly passing this on to the other young women in my life. I'm looking forward for more writings from Emily Dixon.
Where to start? Even as a man, I took many things from this book. It was heart warming, well written, hilarious, and yes, scandalous. Finally! There is a Christian book that deals with sexuality in a real way. Too often, Christian books dealing with sexuality skate around the issues, use the same old cliches, and just don't say what needs to be said. Not the case here. Emily has taken her education in Biblical languages and applied it in a contemporary way that can truly help young and older women. Granted, if any of you are scared of this topic, you might want to hold on to your cardigans. Emily throws all the punches in this one. As a side note, even though we're not the target audience, if there are any single fathers of young women, you need to read this book. It will give you ideals to gather resources to help your daughters.
This book was everything I have been looking for, after 16 years of marriage, as a 37 year old wife and mother who grew up in the church. These are the issues I plan to address with my daughter, and so well written. Best book I've read, esp Christian book, in decades.
Emily Dixon’s aptly named Scandolous is a fresh, honest, and raw look at how we approach women’s issues. From how we dress to love, dating and sex, Dixon covers these topics and more in an unashamed manner. Where women’s ministries fear to tread, Dixon does not. Emily’s writing style is both eloquent and gritty, as she gently brings you to the truth while ripping you from your comfortable place of complacent ignorance. I found myself laughing out loud, nodding my head in agreement, or slapping my forehead when an “ah-ha” moment came about. Don’t mistake this book for a shock and awe book of radical statements – Scandalous is filled with Biblical references. Whenever Dixon imposes her own view points, they are clearly marked as such. There are aspects of this book that can certainly make a person cringe and gasp, “Oh I can’t believe that she went there – and she went there like that!” Part of me wants to caution that if you are a woman who is easily offended by these things, don’t get this book; however, I also want to say that this book is tailor made for women like you.
I give it full stars for the fresh message and beautiful writing.
